GmbH was founded in 1999 by Prof. Dr. Drexhage, Dr. Sauer, Prof. Dr. Wolfrum and Dr. Zander, scientists in Siegen and Heidelberg, Germany. As an investor Berlin Seed Capital Fund GmbH joined the company in 2000.

The highly motivated team of draws on a rich experience in the field of fluorescence. Prof. Drexhage and his coworkers have studied many aspects of light emission and photochemistry of dyes for several decades. They have designed and synthesized functional dyes for a wealth of applications. Since the early nineties they have concentrated on fluorescent markers for bio-molecules.

In 2000 the young company started already marketing fluorescent dyes for medical diagnostics and biochemistry. The new ATTO-dyes were first presented at the ACHEMA 2000 in Frankfurt. From then on the line of products has grown continously. It now comprises high-quality labels from the UV to the near-IR region of the spectrum.
